Advanced Laser Technology

SKIN TIGHTENING:
Sciton is introducing a skin tightening treatment to enhance one’s appearance with minimal amount of pain.

Collagen is a protein molecule that is found in the skin, muscles, tendons and bones and provides basic structural support. With age, collagen is gradually lost in the mid-layers of the skin causing deterioration, deflation and decent, causing facial lines, sagging and wrinkles.

There are all kinds of modalities on the market to stimulate collagen production by putting heat into the tissues. IPL, BBL, Thermage, Titan and ST to name a few. None of their procedures are a replacement for a surgical face-lift but these procedures definitely help especially in early stages of skin aging.

ST’s prolonged heating action penetrates to the collagen and causes it to contract and tighten it. New collagen production is triggered over the following six months. Besides the initial tightening, the full impact will be seen over the next two to six months because new collagen is still being produced.

ST is great for treating the following:

  • Early Jowling
  • Loose Skin
  • Wrinkling around nose and mouth
How is works?
The light penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) where collagen production occurs and heats up the collagen which causes is to remodel itself. This process takes time for these cells to remodel. Histology slides show it begins at around 6 weeks. So, results may take up to 6 months to see. Some clients have felt a change in texture after one treatment.
How many treatments?
These are gradual, relatively painless, fast treatments. Most clients should plan on 3-4 treatments at four-week intervals.
Does it hurt?
Most clients would describe it as a warm, tingling sensation and not painful. No topical anaesthesia or medication is required.
What can I expect after my treatment?
The skin may be pink or slightly red. There may be some mild swelling and temporary tenderness along the jaw line. Due to the heat, very rarely some blisters may develop. You may cover the area with makeup. How long is a session?
Each session takes approx. 20-60 minutes depending on the area.

Treatment of Sun Damage, Hyper pigmentation, Facial Veins, Telangiectasia, Rosacea and Redness with BBL™ (Broad Band Light)

The BBL™ or Intense Pulsed light is the latest technology for treating a variety of skin conditions. This light has a built-in cooling system, which cools the skin before, during and after each treatment shot. This makes the treatment much more comfortable and reduces chances of blistering and hyper pigmentation.

    BBL is used for:
  • Sun damage and photo aging
  • hyper pigmentation
  • vascular lesion—dilated blood vessels, broken blood capillaries
  • Some of these lesions can be socially embarrassing and can be successfully treated now with light, without injury to the surrounding healthy skin. Depending on the condition usually 4-6 treatments are recommended.

For healthy skin, it is also a great treatment for preventing aging of skin and restoring its youthful look.

How it works:
BBL Photo rejuvenation reduces and eliminates the unsightly sun damage visible on your skin. Most of us recognize this as freckles, fine lines and the larger brown age or liver spots. Whether on your face, hands, neck, chest or back, this treatment can make you look like you’ve turned back time. With an average of six treatments spread out at three-week intervals, BBL Photo rejuvenation stimulates the production of collagen. As the new collagen forms, fine lines and wrinkles are decreased. BBL technology improves both the superficial and deeper skin layers and rejuvenates the skin while at the same time delivering beneficial thermal energy to deep issue. After a series of treatments, you can see a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation and the appearance of smoother, revitalized skin.

BBL Photo rejuvenation uses a technology called Intense Pulsed Light (BBL). At first glance, it is similar to a conventional laser, which emits a fixed wavelength of light. But BBL technology is far different than laser technology. Instead, BBL devices produce a broad spectrum of light in a range of wavelengths. A trained BBL physician or technician customizes these wavelengths to suit your type of skin and its needs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does BBL do?
The light energy delivered by the BBL gently heaths up the upper layers of your skin. The heath absorbed by the targeted areas will stimulate the skin cells. This will restore your skin to its natural beauty, making it smoother and more vibrant. What areas can be treated?

Any area of your body can be treated. The most common ones are face, neck, hands, chest and shoulders, which typically are the most exposed to the damaging effects of the sun.

How many treatments will I need?
Depending upon lesions treated anywhere from 2 to 5 treatments will produce the desired results. How long will it take to recover?

This minimally invasive and gentle procedure can be performed during lunchtime with virtually no downtime. What should I expect after the treatment?

Typically you may experience some redness that will resolve within a few hours. For some pigmented lesions you will see a darkening of the treated areas followed by fading and flaking off at a later stage. Since results vary depending on patient condition, number of treatments and area treated, your physician will provide you with all the complete information about the post treatment effects and results.

Will it be uncomfortable?
The procedure is gentle and non-invasive. There should be minimal or no discomfort. You will feel like a rubber band snap of the skin as the procedure is performed. However this varies from patient to patient and depends on the depth of the treatment. There is no need for any topical anaesthesia; however patients may choose to use it on more sensitive areas. Your physician will recommend the best options during consultation.

What will happen during the procedure?
Your eyes will be protected with safety shields or glasses. You may briefly feel a rubber band snap or warm sensation as the targeted areas absorb the light. Your procedure may take a few minutes to half an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated and the type and depth of the procedure performed. Your physician will discuss all the options with you. What aftercare do I need?

It is important to follow your physician's instructions. You may be given some skin care products and instructions on how to use them. This will minimize your risk of inflammation or redness and ensure the shortest healing time. You will be sensitive to ultra-violet light and you must avoid direct sun exposure until fully healed. Fully cover your skin or use a good sunscreen whenever you go outdoors.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Let's face it; excess body hair can be unsightly and embarrassing. Shaving, plucking, waxing and depilatory creams provide temporary fixes that are inconvenient, irritating, messy and only temporary. Electrolysis is time consuming, sometimes painful, and is useful only in removing hair from small areas.

Excess and unwanted hair is a common problem. Women frequently experience this condition on the face, especially the upper lip or eyebrow area, in the bikini area, under the arms or on the legs. Men often wish to rid themselves of hair on their back or chest. They too may have unwanted hair between their eyebrows or on other parts of their face. Advanced technology lasers and light sources are rapidly changing hair removal treatment, providing gentle, non-invasive and long-lasting solutions to unwanted hair. Laser and IPL™ solutions provide safe, superior results and patient satisfaction.

HOW THE HAIR GROWS

The follicle is where hair originates - it’s a cavity in the skin that holds and protects the active or living cells that become your hair. Because each hair follicle is independent of the others, each hair may be in a different stage of growth at any one time.

There are three phases `of hair growth. The first is the anagen phase where the hair is in an active growth phase. The catagen or transition phase is next, where hair is no longer growing and part of the hair root is destroyed. In the last phase, the telogen or resting phase, the hair remains connected to the follicle, but doesn’t grow. Old hair usually falls out near the end of the resting phase or is pushed out by the incoming hair starting a new cycle.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Laser hair removal uses various wavelengths of light to target hair follicles and impair their ability to grow. It’s a fast and nearly pain-free method to reduce unwanted hair for people with a wide variety of skin types and hair colour.

How it works: Lasers are used to remove and reduce unwanted hair through a process called selective photothermolysis. The laser is pulsed or turned on for a millisecond, and emits a high-energy flash of light that passes safely through the skin to the hair follicle. The follicle absorbs the light, and converts it into heat. This disables the follicle and impairs the hair's ability to grow. Lasers are only effective for hair removal during the growth phase. This means that more than one session is usually required in order to get all the hairs not in the growth stage at the time. During the treatment, a cool gel is applied to the area to be treated. The laser is placed next to your skin and the light pulses begin. Many laser systems have a cooling tip on the application head to help reduce the surface temperature of your skin and to prevent thermal injury. It also feels a lot better and lets you undergo the treatment under less painful conditions. Many people don’t consider this treatment painful, especially compared to many other hair removal techniques. The feeling is often described as a tingling or stinging sensation or like the snap of a rubber band. Some areas of your body are more sensitive than others and, if necessary, a topical aesthetic can be applied to lessen the discomfort. Almost any area of the body that has excess hair can be treated, including your face, arms, underarms, chest, back, bikini area and legs.

After the treatment, your skin might turn pink or red. Most people find that this sunburned-like effect subsides within a day or so. Many people return to work after having laser hair removal. The results and effectiveness of this treatment do vary, especially depending on skin colour and colour of hair. In the early days of this treatment, lasers seemed to work best on those with dark hair and light skin. Now, new lasers are being created that can treat all six of the Fitzpatrick skin types. The Sciton Laser can be used on all skin types/colours. Generally, the darker your skin, the more difficult it is to get good results. More sessions are usually required.

Other cautions to be aware of include the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, glycolic acids and astringents. You must also avoid the sun for four to six weeks before and after the treatment and avoid plucking, bleaching and waxing hair for six weeks before the treatment. Shaving is acceptable.
